Background of the study
Library book donation drives are pivotal in enhancing literacy by increasing the availability of diverse reading materials, particularly in underserved communities. In Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, such initiatives have been implemented by both public libraries and community organizations to expand access to books and promote reading habits. These drives not only replenish library collections but also serve as community events that raise awareness about literacy and education. By engaging local stakeholders and fostering a culture of donation and sharing, these programs contribute significantly to literacy development (Chima, 2023). The provision of a wide range of reading materials—from academic texts to popular literature—helps address the diverse needs of learners and supports both formal and informal education. However, challenges such as inconsistent donation cycles, logistical issues, and limited community participation can undermine the full potential of these initiatives. This study evaluates the impact of book donation drives on literacy development in Bende, examining their effectiveness in enhancing reading culture and educational outcomes (Ndu, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of book donation drives, literacy development in Bende remains below desired levels. Inconsistent donation practices and limited community involvement have resulted in insufficient growth in library collections, thereby affecting reading engagement. This study aims to explore the challenges and constraints that hinder the effectiveness of book donation drives and their subsequent impact on literacy development in the region (Okafor, 2023).

Objectives of the study

To evaluate the impact of book donation drives on literacy levels.

To identify challenges affecting the consistency and reach of donation programs.

What challenges hinder the effective implementation of these drives?

What strategies can be implemented to improve the impact of book donations on literacy?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it assesses the role of book donation drives in fostering literacy and education. The findings will inform policymakers and library administrators on optimizing donation strategies, ultimately contributing to enhanced literacy rates and educational development in Bende (Eze, 2024).
